Obituary for John Stevenson

John Stevenson
Stevenson, John
January 11, 1941 - August 9, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Hugh Stevenson, 79, at Health Sciences North Sunday, August 9, 2020. John passed peacefully with his wife Carol by his side, after a progressive illness. He is survived and sadly missed by his wife Carol, daughter Kimberley (Peter), stepchildren: Joanne (Tom), Melissa (Greg) and Joe; and grandchildren: Victoria, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Thomas and Joshua. John is predeceased by his father James Stevenson and mother Madeleine (nee Walsh). John was born in Kimberley, South Africa and immigrated to Canada as a teenager. John pursued a career in contract mining and was an accomplished mining engineer who managed numerous mining projects throughout the world. John spent impactful time in Australia, Chile and throughout Canada. He and Carol ultimately moved to Dowling in the greater Sudbury region, where they have lived for the past 31 years. An avid Conservative, John enjoyed sharing his thoughts on policy and government in social gatherings and on Facebook. He lamented the limited vocabulary learned and used by most people and appreciated proper diction and emphatic language. John had a soft spot in his heart for Fred, an orange tabby rescue with loads of personality and independence. He will be remembered for his love of golf, football, spicy food and enjoying a cold beer on a hot summer’s day. Those who had the pleasure of knowing him, will remember his warm smile and impeccable attention to detail. May you rest in peace, you are now free from all pain. Following John’s wishes, there will be no service or visitation. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Pet Save (petsavesudbury.com) or other animal charity organizations. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Cooperative Funeral Home 4691 RR 15, Chelmsford, ON.
