Remembering visits of our cousin Vincent spending summer vacations in the '50's on our farm certainly was an anticipated venture if not somewhat hair raising. Being years younger, my 3 sisters and I were anticipating our," Big City Dweller'' and he was a welcoming addition to our chore ridden summers. We probably annoyed him to the extent that one night he gathered all us younger cousins into the "bat ridden " hay barn and with hooting owls at strategic times, proceeded to regale us with ghost stories. That night showed no mercy for myself or my mother who came to my rescue assuring""That no creeping lady with a golden arm " was ascending the stairs outside my bedroom to clobber little children who asked too many questions. Going forward decades later, this summer actually, my sisters and I and spouses were invited up to Vince and Heidi's cottage that our Uncle ( Vince's father) had built and I had visited as a child. We had the most wonderful time, no hair raising ghost stories this time, just pure fun, lots of laughter and maybe a few family secrets exposed, topped with a scrumptious b.b.q.catered by daughter Christine and her friend. Who gets steak and all the trimmings in an afternoon b.b.q.? I also wondered why when Vince came in the summers that he slept in the hay barn....my family was known to be gracious and why would that be as to my young mind it appeared somewhat cruel. Well, the truth came out that day at the cottage....seems it was his suggestion all along hmmmn. think up ghost stories and maybe no night curfews to get caught? We all eventually evolved into our adult lives and now cherish those memories, as well at that delightful day last summer. Wish we could have had more time together..
