Our family patriarch has left us. He has left our hearts, filled with love for this fine man that gave so much and asked for so little. We his family here and in Finland carry with us the warmth, humour, wit, goodness, love of dance, music and singing, masterful storytelling, unforgettable bright smile, and twinkle in his eye that we got to relish in his company. The impression that Pappa made on the course of all our lives is a beautiful and permanent one. Sulevi came to Canada in 1957 with a small suitcase and $100 in his pocket. He married Anelma (his “elämän sulostuttaja”) in 1958 and thus began their 62-year journey of loyalty to one another and to their children.  Family was paramount, as were family gatherings.  He positively shone when he spent time on vacation with his large family in Finland. His nieces and nephews from there kept in close contact with him until the end with loving words of support. Sulevi worked for INCO for 28 years, primarily as a construction leader. Throughout those years he also managed a dairy farm and later a beef cattle operation along with his wife and children.  We, his children, Helen (Pauli), Henry (Rose), Markus, and Margit (PJ) could never match his legacy in any way.  His grandchildren Kevin, Devon, Silvo, Miika, Karissa, Karley and Kandice were blessed to have such a wise Pappa to spend time with and learn from his life’s lessons. His newest joy and the light of his day was his great-granddaughter Emberly.  He was so thankful to his granddaughter-in-law Kayla for giving him this beautiful gift in his last year of life. His sons-in-law Pauli Hernesniemi and PJ McClosky deeply respected and appreciated this true gentleman who filled in as a father-figure for 40 years. And so with heavy hearts we shall gather together at a private family funeral for our beloved Isä and Pappa and share beautiful memories of someone who battled courageously to stay with us longer.
