The family announces with great sorrow his passing in Sudbury, Friday, September 11, 2020 at the age of 82 years. Beloved husband of Laurianne (née Lafleur) Valiquette. Son of the late Eugene and of the late Goldie (née Trimmer) Valiquette. Loving father of Alain (Denise), Lianne (Devin Arbuckle) and Yves (Danielle). Dear brother of Gordon (Paulette), Bryan (Nicole), MaryLynn Filion and Linda Myher (late Terry). Predeceased by his siblings Marjorie Chuipka and Christopher (Ellenor). Cherished grandfather of Émilie, Éric, Reese, Ella and Camille. John’s teaching career began in 1959 at St-Jean School where he taught grades 5, 6 and 7. In 1965, he was appointed director of physical education for the Sudbury Catholic Separate School Board. John began his academic career in 1975 when he was hired as an assistant professor in the Laurentian School of Education. In his 21 years of teacher training, he taught physical and health education at the pre-service level as well as at the B.A. level on and off campus. He also stood out for his many contributions to the university community. Among others, he was speaker of the Senate and member of the executive committee of the Senate from 1983 to 1985 and from 1994 to 1996, member of the Senate from 1991 to 1993, and has filled many positions within the Association of professors of the LU. John will also go down in history as the first captain of the Laurentian University Voyageurs hockey team. John used his retirement to hone his skills as a hockey player, golfer and fisherman. He has also devoted himself to his favorite hobby, reading, and pursuing the genealogical research of his family and that of his wife Laurianne. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation. A private funeral Mass will be held.
