Obituary for Jean-Yves Robert

Jean-Yves Robert
It is with great sadness that the family announces his passing in Sudbury on Thursday July 21, 2022 at the age of 86 years. Beloved husband of Anne (née Hurtubise) Robert of Val Caron. Son of the late Charlemagne and of the late Cordélia (née Chenier) Robert. Loving father of Chantal Robert (Luc Dalcourt) of Hanmer, François Robert of Sudbury, Alain Robert of Montreal, QC and Eric Robert (Tara) of Kars. Survived by his brother Rhéal. Predeceased by his siblings Gilles, Yvon and Réjeanne. Cherished grandfather of Alexie, Dominic, Kiirsten, Sara-Anne, Venessa, Tessa, Jenna and great-grandfather of 5. Sadly missed by his nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. John was known for his humility, kindness and generosity. He had a gift for making everyone he met feel comfortable and was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. In his younger years, John enjoyed playing broomball, softball, hockey and golf. During his time as a Real Estate Broker, John served as Director of the Sudbury Real Estate Board and was a Real Estate Instructor for the Ontario Real Estate Association. As Mayor of Valley East, John was very involved in his community. He served as past Chairman and member of the Sudbury Regional Planning Committee, the Regional Municipality of Sudbury Police Services Board as well as the Laurentian Hospital Board of Directors. John was also a Board member of the Sudbury Regional Development Corporation and the Nickel District Conservation Authority. In addition, he was a past Director of the Banque Alimentaire/Sudbury Food Bank. As Mayor of Valley East (circa 1985 to 2000), John’s diligence and drive in promoting his community led to Valley East earning the status of “City” as well as being recognized as the fastest growing municipality in the Region of Sudbury. John’s persistence in his vision for the ongoing growth of Valley East resulted in the completion of several local initiatives such as: the construction a new library, partial expansion of the four-laning of Regional Road 80, the implementation of bus services for the physically challenged, the construction of a fully-paid central fire hall, the creation of a local food bank, the recruitment of doctors as well as the establishment (with the help from local doctors) of Valley East’s first after-hours walk-in medical clinic. In 1992, John was awarded the Federal Commemorative Medal for his significant contributions to the community. In 1994, he received the Sudbury District Medical Society award for his commitment to improving health care in Valley East. In 2002, John was the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee medal for his outstanding and exemplary contribution to his community. Jean-Yves will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the 4th floor staff at Health Sciences North and of Maison McCulloch Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. In keeping with his family’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A mass celebration will be held September 15, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St Marguerite D’Youville church followed by a private burial. If desired, donations to the Maison McCulloch Hospice may be made by cheque or online at www.cooperativefuneralhome.ca. Arrangements have been entrusted with the Cooperative Funeral Home, Sudbury.
