Obituary for Denny Arena (McCullough)

Denny Arena (McCullough)
It is with great sadness we announce the death of Denise (Denny) Arena on Thursday the 17th of February 2022 age 84. Daughter of Dr. John Francis McCullough and Phyllis McCullough (née Irvine). Beloved wife of Angelo Arena (predeceased), mother of Mary Ellen Arena and the late Lisa Perry (Jeff). Grandmother of Jessica McShane (Sean), Lauren Raskevikius (Michael), Jaz Perry of Kingston (Kiara) and Zachary Palmer and great-grandmother of five. Sister to John McCullough (Suzie) of Baulking UK, Vicki Dale (John) and Tasie Cebulski (Larry) of Manotick. Denny was a popular and well-respected nurse in the Emergency Department at the Sudbury Memorial Hospital and earlier assisted in a customized role in the pioneering days of open-heart surgery. She completed her nursing programme in Windsor (after opting out of Business at Queen's where, at 16, she'd been the first girl enrolled). As a young mother of two, she completed an honours B.A. in anthropology at Laurentian University (Grace Hartman award recipient). A silver life master, Denny was also a long-time member of the bridge club. Denny was born and raised in Sudbury. After eloping, she and Angie lived in Southern Ontario and California, but their young family spent much of their favourite time living on the south shore of Lake Ramsey. Some years later they would take their grandchildren to the camp they built in the Bay of Islands, North Channel. Denny loved life and died peacefully at home with loved ones around her closely. She will be fondly remembered by her family and many dear friends. Donations, if desired, can be made to the 'Lisa Perry fund' at the Northern Cancer Foundation.
